Free car parking It’s now up to locals to support our city. That’s the message from Nelson City Council after agreeing to make car parking free for a three month trial. Nelson city retailers packed the public gallery in the council chambers last Thursday, sending a clear message to councillors that they want a level playing field with Richmond retailers, who have enjoyed free car parking for years. Retailers said while the move wouldn’t be a “silver bullet”, it would go a long way to help them bring back shoppers. Councillors agreed and decided to make car parking free in the city from today until September 30, but mayor Rachel

Reese says she now expects to see the city “bustling”. “It’s now up to local people to support their local shops. We’ve been hearing for some time that the lack of free parking is what keeps people away, so with that barrier removed we’ll look forward to seeing Nelson streets bustling.” Retailers are ecstatic about the move and say it will help them get their customers coming back into the city, instead of doing their shopping in Richmond.

There’s been a mainly positive reaction to the Prime Minister’s shock announcement to investigate building the long-talkedabout Southern Link. John Key announced on Sunday that the investigation into building what would be a new state highway, would be funded by the government, prompting support from his cabinet minister and local MP Nick Smith, Nelson AA and residents online.

The road, dubbed the southern link, would provide a third route to the city from the Tasman district, where most of the region’s exports are grown or produced. It would mean that trucks carrying that produce could drive to Port Nelson without having to drive along the scenic Rocks Rd, leaving it clear for development. But it would also mean putting a major road through the community of Victory
and along the popular Railway Reserve cycle trail. Nelson MP Nick Smith and Nelson mayor Rachel Reese have both said they support the link being built. “This highway route along the old railway line has been earmarked for fifty years and needs advancing,” says Nick. “The existing Rocks and Waimea Roads do not have the capacity to cope with the region’s population and ex-
port growth.” He says he’s determined to get the road built and that the effects on Victory are “minimised”. Reaction to the news on the Nelson Weekly Facebook page was mixed, but more were in favour than opposed. “Over a lot of dead bodies, I suspect,” wrote Jacqui Irwin, while Dave Trigg wrote: “Great news, get it done, the sooner the better.”

Free car parking for Nelson FROM PAGE 1 Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan spoke strongly at the council meeting about the benefits of free parking and admitted the Free Parking Tuesday promotion that had run for the past three years was a waste of time. “It’s fantastic that the council has listened to retailers concerns and has agreed to support Nelson city with this free parking initiative over winter. “We know people love Nelson city and we want to make it more enjoyable for them to experience the arts and culture, food and wine, fashion and shopping and, of course, the great al fresco café scene and our gorgeous sunny winter days. We’d love to see the city busy year round and this helps us toward achieving that.” While parking is free from today, time limits still do apply, with a three hour limit for park-
ing in Buxton and Montgomery car parks. The central area of Wakatu Square will remain as all-day paid parking, while the one hour parking spaces around the edge of the square will be free. Expired warrants, registration, and safety issues will still be enforced but a reminder might be issued in the first instance rather than a fine, says the council. Morrison Square has also jumped on board with the council plan and its private car park will also be free for the three month period. The overall financial impact of the trial will be reported back to the council’s governance committee once it is concluded. Councillors will then make a decision to either bring back paid parking or make the trial a permanent move. Retailers spoken to by Nelson Weekly say they were delighted the council listened to what they had to say and hope it will help bring more people into the city.

Wanted man caught in police raid A Nelson man, on the run from police investigating an Auckland drugs ring, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning. Terry Jones, 44, was caught around 4am, after the Armed Offenders Squad and Nelson CIB stormed the motel he was hiding out in. He had been wanted by police for seven weeks in relation to police Operation Genoa - a lengthy investigation into the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine in the
Auckland region. A substantial amount of drugs, believed to be methamphetamine, was also Terry Jones. found in the motel room where Jones was arrested. “Jones has been the subject of nation-wide publicity generated by police and we are confident that his arrest will have an
impact in decreasing the supply, use and associated social carnage in our district methamphetamine so often causes,” Detective Sergeant Chris Roberts of Nelson CIB said. Terry Jones appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday on charges related to the drugs found in his motel room, as well as other charges related to the discovery of a portable clandestine laboratory and methamphetamine in a Nelson secure lock-up unit on May 7, said police. Victory Square turned into Victory River last Wednesday as heavy rain caused flooding. The rain affected homes as far away as Brightwater, but it was Victory, Tahunanui and Bishopdale which were most affected. It was just as well there wasn’t a double booking for two shows that were held in the region at the weekend, with the National Cat Show being held at Saxton Pavilion and the Nelson Bird Club’s Show at Hope Hall. Saxton Stadium was a cat fancier’s heaven at the weekend, with a massive turnout for the show – and not even a fire evacuation could spoil it. Rose Boulton, a member of the Nelson Cat Club, says there were “crowds and crowds” of people coming through on Sunday to check out the top pedigree cats from around New Zealand, which were being judged by an international
panel. “We’re not sure how many people were through yet, because we haven’t had a chance to do the tallies, but it was just brilliant,” she says. “The venue was excellent, the crowd was excellent, and it was another really good show.” The only downside was an evacuation, which put the event on hold for about 45 minutes. There was no fire, but cat owners were forced to put their cats in cages and take them outside, while the fire services checked the venue after an alarm had gone off. On the other side of town, bird lovers flocked to the Hope Hall on Saturday
and Sunday where 306 canaries, finches, love birds, budgies, British and hybrids were entered in the Nelson Bird Club’s annual show. Club president Ted Griffith says they had birds from Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton, Blenheim and Nelson, although it was Richmond breeder Robbie Flowers who stole the show. Robbie, who has been breeding zebra finches for 40 years, won his third Best Zebra Finch ribbon in three shows after earlier winning at Christchurch and Ashburton. “It can take years and years to breed a champion bird although sometimes you can fluke it straight away,” Robbie says.

Historic railway tunnel next for cycle trail The longest disused railway tunnel in the country could soon become the longest cycle trail tunnel in the country. Having last week welcomed news that council had decided to retain funding for the Great Taste Cycle Trail’s development in its annual plan, Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust chair Gillian Wratt says the next stage of construction will be linking up from Wakefield to Tapawera, Woodstock and Motueka, and that could include a trip through the 121 year old Spooner’s
Railway Tunnel. “If we can get the funding together, which we want to do is get the route through to the entrance of the tunnel in the next year and then get through the tunnel the year after that,” she says. “All going well, the plan would be to have the tunnel open in a couple of years.” Located near the Spooner’s Range, the tunnel runs in a straight line for 1352 metres and has only been used for guided tours and monthly walks since it closed in 1955 when the entire railway network shut
down in Nelson. Gillian says it’s a great local feature to include on the trail. “It offers a really great link for the trail to actually complete the vision of the Tasman Great Taste Trail, which is a loop. It will be the longest cycle trail tunnel in the country when it’s completed.” Gillian says the land through to the tunnel has varying owners, while the tunnel itself is controlled by Land Information New Zealand. The trust is in negotiations with all parties over access. “There have
been conversations with land owners and generally there’s been a really enthusiastic response.” While the Tapawera Historical Society, who help maintain the tunnel, were initially opposed to the idea due to worries over vandalism, custodian Bob Stewart says the tunnel “belongs to the community”. “It’s a great piece of Nelson’s history. It’ll be good for the district. We’ve been working with the trust with the idea of getting the trail through there.”

Seeking young professionals Nelson Young Professionals have given themselves a makeover in an effort to attract more members. The events hosted by the networking group have always been popular and attract upto 150 people, despite membership sitting at around 50. So NYP president Michelle Byczkow says it was time to come up with something fresh, so they’ve created a new website, logo and have introduced a membership card scheme. Paid members will now be given membership cards to use for discounts at supporting businesses. Membership now also
lasts for 12 months from the date you sign up, rather than just lasting until the end of the current year. “A lot of people were hearing about us through the spring ball each year,” says Michelle. “They would end up paying the non-membership rate to come along to that, because it wasn’t worth them joining up for the couple of months before the membership year ended. The new membership structure fixes that. And now that we are holding a lot more events throughout the year, people are realising it’s worth joining up so they can enjoy the discount-
ed and often free rates, that members get for each event.” The NYP annual ball has been set for October 11 this year, and it is always a huge event amongst the city’s young professionals. The group has also organised other events, including a ski trip, a bowling night, a brewery tour and a “women in business” talk. New plan will decide camp’s future After backtracking on initial plans to close the Brook Valley Holiday Park, Nelson City Council is now asking Nelsonians what they think should be done with the land. Last week, the community services committee decided to prepare a management plan for the recreation reserve that contains the Brook campground. Community services chair, councillor Pete Rainey, says
the process will allow everyone to comment about what the reserve may look like in the future, including what activities happen within it. “We’ve had some really good, robust discussions with people living at the camp and the wider community, about the future of the camp and the reserve in general,” he says. “This is an important city asset. We need to take a strategic approach that looks at all the
issues.” He says there is a lot to consider and that it needs to be done properly. “Involving the Nelson community in the development of a management plan is the most effective and efficient way to move forward.” The Brook campground will continue to operate with an onsite camp manager, however it will not accept any new campers.

This weekend, July 5 and 6, Action Indoor Sports in hosting an indoor netball competition over two days, with all proceeds going to the campaign. Manager Vicky Collis says she's hoping for around 20 teams, or 120 players. On Saturday night, July 5, Lotos (Last of the Old School) are holding the Mike Corkill Benefit Concert at the Richmond Town Hall. Hot rods and bikes prepare to cruise Phillip Rollo Reporter

Mark Holdaway doesn’t just see a vehicle or a mode of transport when he looks at a hot rod, he sees an expression of art. “Each vehicle embodies a certain style, you know? We build them and design them according to how we feel about them. I’m a mechanic by trade and modern cars leave me cold, they’ve very utilitarian but they’ve got no style,” he says. It’s a unique way of looking at it, but in many ways it epitomises his love for American hot rods. “You can look at people in their hot rod and you can put them together. I’m a cruisy sort of guy and the Willys is a cruisy car. But I’m a little bit hill-billy, rough around the edges, and the Model A is like that. Mark, who lives in Waimea West, owns a 1929 Ford Model A roadster pick-up and a 1947 Willys station wagon — both of which he’s custom built to suit his own needs and to his own specifications. “A lot of hot rods you see nowadays look quite similar, but those two, what they are and the way they’re built, they’re very individual. The Willys would be the only one like that in the world, with the engine and running gear I’ve put into it.” He says the Willys station

Photo: Phillip Rollo. wagon is made up of three different cars and took 14 years to build. “When we got it we were just going to put it on the road as a rat car, just rough, but my wife, Jan, said to do it properly. Right from the get go I had a concept of what it was going to look like and it’s now turned out exactly like that. It’s been quite exciting really.” It’s only been on the road for the past two years but has already had plenty of use, the same with the Model A which Mark uses regularly. “In Easter 2011 we took it to Invercargill for the national street rods and it won the prize for the best traditional hot rod. It was completely unexpected. But what was funny to us is it’s such

a simple hot rod, that’s how they used to make them in the 30s and 40s. Modern hot rods are $150,000 or more, but this was the hit of the show.” Mark will have a difficult decision on his hands this weekend. With the Nelson City Rod & Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise being held on Sunday — which hot rod does he take? The Independence Day Cruise is open to all types of American motor vehicles. Entry is $5 per vehicle. Participants need to assemble at the Nelson Suburban Club from 9:30am, and will depart from 11am. Founders hosted the event on Sunday which included a wide range of activities for local kids, including food, bouncy castles, live entertainment, train and pony rides, crafts and lots of face painting. Nationally, the day is held in March, but parent feedback has meant the day out is now held in winter when activities for children are limited. Restoration of Cable Bay flats earns award nomination Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz As a farmer, Ian Price remembers with horror draining swamps and cutting down forests. Now he’s trying to make amends to the environment by planting trees – thousands of trees. The Nelson man has been the central figure in efforts to plant 80,000 trees on the ecologically-supreme Paremata Flats in Cable Bay. He has another 45,000 trees to go in within the next two years. When the planting is finished, it will be the first steps in restoring an alluvial forest in the extremely fertile flats, which are owned by Nelson City Council. For his efforts, Ian has been nominated for the Pride of New Zealand Awards in the Environmental category. Ian started his working life as a farmer in the King Country and is open about his destruction of the environment. He then moved to Auckland and slowly immersed himself in environmental projects, in an effort to make up for the damage he did while a farmer. “I was a farmer and I’ve drained swamps and cut down forests, but I’ve since learnt about the mistakes I made. I’ve done a lot of damage to the environment in my past

Paremata Flats have been ranked by Nelson City Council as the most ecologically important land it owns or manages and, as a result, has been happy for Forest and Bird to continue with the planting. Ian says the reason the land is so important is that it’s an interface between estuary, land and river.
Ian first got involved when he went along to a planting day on the flats, organised by Nelson City Council and Forest and Bird. There he saw his skills could be used to push the project ahead. “They were planting between 500-700 trees. So I offered my skills and suggested that we increase the planting from 700 trees to 10,000 in the first year. The council told us they had no money for it so we raised it all ourselves and the second year

we planted a further 20,000 trees.” After some delays, Ian says he plans to plant a further 12,500 trees next year and 20,000 the year after that. “It’s all subject to us raising the funds, but it’s been a great community project with almost 500 volunteers giving up their time to plant the trees and create this environment.” The forest was originally cut down by settlers for grazing because it was the most fertile land. By replanting the forest, Ian hopes the rare flora and birdlife that once lived there will return. Although it will take 100 to 200 years for the forest to reach maturity, the benefits of the forest being restored have already started. “We are creating a habitat where these rare species can breed and expand. It’s a very unique ecology and there’s nothing like it in the region, so it’s very good work we’re doing and we’re already seeing rare native birds coming back.” Although Ian will never see the forest at the peak of its powers, he says knowing that he’s done something worthwhile is satisfaction enough for him. “I get an element of peace within myself for giving something back. If I can do something for the next generations, that’s what matters to me.” Nominations for the Pride of New Zealand Awards have closed, with regional finalists to be announced this month.

Board elected for motor sport park Fundraising and design and planning will be two of the bigger challenges for the new directors of the New Zealand Central Motorsports and Adventure Park after they were appointed at a meeting in Nelson last week. The proposed motorsport and adventure park, will be constructed on a 203 hectare property at Stanley Brook owned by Nelson motorsport enthusiast Garry Adcock. It was granted resource consent earlier this year and, last Thursday, about 100 people elected a board of directors at the group's first public meeting. One of the directors Dave McLeod, says
they were pleased with the turn out at the meeting which was attended by representatives from "a good cross-section of motorsport groups". "We had all the groups we thought would be there and some we didn't even know existed. Now we will be going out and listening to potential user groups and seeing what they want, and then try to provide it for them," Dave says. Dave says the next step will be to form working parties at the first board meeting on July 8, to look at specific aspects of the project including fundraising, planning and design, governance and marketing.
Garry Adock was elected chairman of the board. Board members are Dave, Damian Stone, Paul Jennings, Ash Price, Ashton Wood, Rick Weldon, Steve Steele, Peter Fitzgibbon, Dugald Ley and Clinton Lochead, while Trish Palmer is secretary-treasurer. Dave says the key to the venture's success will be to develop a site that caters for a wide range of activities. Although the park will be centred around a complex of motorsport tracks and facilities, it will also include a conference centre, accommodation, a camping ground, mountainbike park and tracks and a variety of recreational activities.

Light Nelson to add some colour to winter
Light Nelson isn’t far away from brightening up the winter nights with an illuminating display of light installations from over 30 artists. The children’s “Float a Wish” activity kicks off the event on Thursday, 3 July, with floating lanterns built by local primary school children being launched in the Queens Garden pond. highlight the threat to Long Tailed Bats in New Zealand. Many of the bats will be made as a part of a youth project, but the public are welcome to join in and make their own bats too. There will also be 40 other exhibits from artists in a collaboration of art, science and technology. Light Nelson Trust chair Brian Riley says there are several projects he’s very excited about. “I’m really interested in Fleur Stewart‘s quirky, illuminated sheep, and I think there will be a lot of people wanting to have a go at Jacob Barrow’s giant virtual reality game where the public can watch the play-
ers’ action on screen,” he says. “And, of course, there’s a lot of excitement about Ben Clegg’s laser recreation of the Riwaka Resurgence – Ben did the Rainbow Bridge last year so we know what he’s capable of.” Creativity and imagination are let loose through a range of different media, including laser technology, digital imagery, performance, music and poetry. Light Nelson will be free to the public nightly, from 5:30-9:30pm at Queens Gardens, Hardy and Bridge St, plus Albion Square, and NMIT Arts and Media building and campus.

NaylaNd College Since 2007, Nayland College has been helping its students acquire vital skills in preparation for life after school. The Gateway programme sets up future school leavers for success in the workforce by providing them with valuable hands-on knowledge through local businesses in a range of industries. The school organises year 12 and 13 students to be placed alongside a business or industry of their choice for one day a week. This lets them gain a basic understanding of what employment is actually like, as well as showing them if the industry they have chosen is going to be something they want to pursue in the future. “By going with an employer it can cement their choice as a positive thing. If the student goes "no, that doesn’t quite feel like me" and they shift out, it is a really positive result as well,” says Gateway Co-ordinator Andrew Shannyn Riley working at The Cellar Door. Riordan. The programme has a great record of success, not only in opening the eyes of students to the trade or sector ployment. The range of employers partaking in Gateway they wish to work in, but also opening doors to future em- at Nayland includes aviation, building, electrical, auto-
motive, hospitality, hairdressing and health. The scope of placements can go wherever the student wants, keeping in mind some areas are more difficult to work in due to the seriousness of the job and confidentiality or privacy between clients. An additional bonus for the students is the opportunity to gain industry credits, which count for both their NCEA and their relevant industry qualification. The model is designed to fit both the student and the employer. Business owners are given the opportunity to see first hand how their potential employee manages all aspects of the job. Dylan Clarke was one of the successful students who found employment and an apprenticeship out of the programme. “I was looking for a job and I thought Gateway would be good because of the work experience and learning on site, instead of all theory. It gives you a choice and is a bit of an eye opener to what you want to do. I could change my mind if I wanted to,” he says.

Gateway ProGramme “We found a remarkable young man,” says builder Brent Dunlea. “It was an easy way to get employees without having to do any of the hard looking. We’re always looking for new staff and it makes a difference when you’ve got a programme that they can be put into and you can find them that way.” The ideal placement would see the student build a good relationship with their employer, gain work after school or during holidays and then take up an apprenticeship at the end of it. Andrew says the programme is great for any student, but is particularly suitable for students who want to do a particular trade or gain an apprenticeship. The experience and assessments gained can also give them an edge over other applicants when applying for an apprenticeship. The programme is funded by the Tertiary Education Committee, which allows the school to purchase the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) packages and the gear need-
ed by students to safely and efficiently fill their placements. The assessments from each industry are completed by students in class time and the practicals are overseen by ITO assessors at the place of employment. The programme is also run “offline” to accommodate students who are more academic and don’t want to interrupt their NCEA study. Students are then able to pursue their placement outside of school hours or in study periods. The Nayland College Gateway programme has successfully upskilled and prepared many students for the workforce, and local businesses continue to benefit from these young, motivated students who have the skills to make their way in the world. Our Civil Defence Emergency Management Group (CDEM) plays a vital role within the community and the opening of their new premises in Richmond means the efficiency of their response to small and major events is greatly increased. The CDEM has the important role of helping the community understand its risks, making plans so we are ready to respond to emergencies, leading the response to emergency events and co-ordinating the recovery afterwards. The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is a partnership between Nelson City and Tasman District Councils with the support of key partner organisations who are involved in the delivery of emergency management including Police, Fire, Ambulance, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management. Previously the Nelson Tasman CDEM Group operated out of the main chamber of one of the two councils and as well as a small office in the Trafalgar centre. “Fortunately the funding and construction of this facility has enabled us to move to a much better situation,” says Roger Ball, manager of the Nelson Tasman CDEM. “All of those other facilities were sub-optimal because they took a long time to set up and we couldn’t have everything ready to go, whereas

From the start, Civil Defence worked with architects, Arthouse, to design a layout that sees a central “operations room.” The main operations room is a large area with modular tables, TV screens, projectors and computers and is a place where people can gather, connect to the outside world and plan together to respond to an emergency. Surrounding rooms include meeting rooms, offices and utility areas. The most critical requirement of the facility was that it be built to a structural level 4 in order to withstand a reasonably powerful event. “Structural level 2 is like a standard office building and a level 5 is like a bunker. The whole ground floor is heavily reinforced concrete and then the top floor is a really lightweight timber structure. It’s not bullet proof but if anything’s going to be left standing it should be that,” says Jorgen Andersen, Director of Arthouse Architects. The building also incorporates a number of

The first time the emergency operations centre was used during the Easter storm showed just how much potential the facility has and highlighted to Roger and his team the improvements that need to be made to become a more efficient service. “It was useful in the sense it gave us a chance to test the systems that we had up and running at that point. We had a dozen people or so in the office on the Friday attending liaison meetings and we had to do a helicopter drop for Graham Valley later in the weekend but it all went well,” says Roger. “We haven’t gone cutting edge, one of the things that we have done is to go with flexible, modular standard systems so when people come in whom we’ve trained but they don’t come in very often, it’s familiar to them. For our business what we need is something reliable that people will know and understand when they come in to help us.” “We’ve seen an evolution of emergency management in New Zealand in the last couple of decades and it’s really accelerated by the Canterbury earthquakes, our own regional
floods and a lot of other regional weather events to the point where there is a greater demand for the sorts of services we provide in the community. And it’s not just about that response, the other area we spend a lot of time in is public education and trying to promote and build community resilience,” says Roger. He stresses that having a three day kit with plenty of water is a must, a plan for how to reach your family in case of an emergency and for business’ to be aware of the local hazards like storm water drains and river or creek systems, think about backing up vital data and making sure the insurance is up to date. Being prepared puts the community in a better position to bounce back during the recovery phase, minimising costly downtime. Bright start to England career for Marist star He had his path to Super Rugby blocked so headed overseas fulltime, and now former Marist number eight Mark Bright could be in line to represent England at the Commonwealth Games – at the ripe old age of 35. A standout for Marist, Nelson Bays and the Tasman Makos over the years, Mark has made a name for himself for London Scottish since leaving New Zealand in 2011. London Scottish competes in England’s second tier competition, known as The Championship, and he scored 21 tries in 28 games. That form saw him rewarded with a call-up to the England sevens squad as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month. A big crowd watched some tight racing in Brightwater over the weekend, as some of the top local motocross riders went handlebar-to-handlebar at the Nelson Flat Track Champs. Nelson rider Bryan Heaphy took out the Leith McConichie

Giant legend plays his last home game
Friday night’s 101-89 win over the Southland Sharks seemed more like a party than a basketball game, and all of the celebration was for just one man — Phill Jones. The 368-game veteran played his final home game for the Nelson Giants after a record breaking 19 seasons with the franchise, but he’s hoping to extend the celebration one more week as the team head into the Final Four in Wellington on Friday. “Winning the championship would be the dream scenario, the dream ending. It’d be amazing to bring the trophy back with us and hang the boots up after that,” the Giants captain says ahead of the final games of his career. “There will be some tough teams up there, so we’re going to have to play the best we’ve played all season, but if we can then I know I have ended it right.” Phill, now 40 years old, described his final game as “special”, scoring 21 points in front of a sold-out Saxton Stadium

You could quite easily lose those games but we kept it into perspective and got the win. I remember looking around the crowd and seeing that there were no empty seats which was a pretty special feeling. I’m very grateful for the house to be absolutely packed.” In a decorated career, which saw him play 19 seasons for the Nelson Giants and one season for the Otago Nuggets, Phill has the most appearances in NBL history, and sits second on the list of alltime point scorers. He also played 211 times for the Tall
Blacks, was a key part of the national team’s fourth placing at the 2002 FIBA World Championship, and has represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games twice. He was the second highest scorer overall in Athens. Phill has played professional basketball in Finland, Greece and Italy, and played for the New Zealand Breakers and the Cairns Taipans in the ANBL. There are clearly many highlights, so it was understandable that he struggled to pick out one. “There have been championships, big plays, big dunks, there’s just so many. But this, the ending here in Nelson tonight would probably be up there as well.” Phill says the plan for retirement is work and spending time with his wife Kat and their three children. The Fico Finance Nelson Giants take on the Wellington Saints in the semi-finals on Friday night. Tip off is at 8:30pm.

Talk to any of our top umpires and you will soon see that they are as passionate about umpiring as others are about playing. Maree Smith and Kate Smith are Nelson’s top umpires, both have New Zealand B ranking and Kate is currently part of the Netball New Zealand Emerging Talent Squad. While Kate says the top umpires are grateful of the support from Nelson Netball, essentially it is self-funded. Kate and Maree, to date, have officiated at the Super Club Tournament, Queen’s Birthday Squad Tournament in Christchurch, and an Under 19 and U23 Tournament in Auckland. Kate Smith has been appointed to NZ tournaments in Dunedin and Annie Ewers-Kennedy to the NZ U 17 Tournament in Auckland. The “Smith Ladies” also travel to Wellington to umpire Premier games – with the stadium practically next door to the airport, they fly in, umpire and fly out again. These opportunities are practically self-funded, and the experience is necessary to be able to step up to the next level. Just as players aspire to test themselves against stronger and more skilled players, umpires need the experience of officiating players at a higher level. Believe it or not, umpires are not looking for mistakes in games – their job is to apply the

rules of the game. They need to look at a game freshly and they strive to have position, vision and timing in sync well enough to rule on it. Nelson is fortunate in having a number of New Zealand C umpires in Julie McGrath, Brenda Thomson, Deb Vincent, Vicki Reid and Lisa Stove. While Nelson appears to be well endowed with qualified umpires, they are at present massively short on numbers - particularly for the higher grades. Nelson has lost the services of accomplished umpire Mary Ellis, who has retired, and Myron Elkington who has transferred to Wellington. And what happens when an umpire retires? Some will continue to coach as they have a huge amount of knowledge to share with the less experienced. Val Fitzsimmons is a prime example as she continues to offer her services as a coach and mentor. While Andy Vincent may have hung up his whistle, he is still actively involved in the sport. While Nelson is in a re-building phase they are looking to identify umpires coming through the ranks and are offering support, training and personal coaching. There is a pathway to tertiary education as well, with Mainland umpires eligible for Lincoln scholarships. It’s about identifying the balance in their life with passion to play, umpire and educate. A Marlborough umpire has recently completed her
four years study on a scholarship. If you would like more information, seek Andy out at the courts and he will point you in the right direction. Marilyn Milne oversees the younger umpires and has two groups who umpire Future Ferns games on Wednesday s and Saturdays. After recruiting at the beginning of the season she now has a full complement. These young umpires have a 15 minutes coaching session before games start, which can cover rules or just general support. Marilyn also looks after a Junior Squad where the ultimate goal is to give the youngsters the tools and confidence to sit their umpire’s exam. Last year, eight juniors were successful in the Local Theory, with five going on to attain their Local Practical. Marilyn is also Nelson’s Umpire Draw Steward and anyone interested in umpiring on Saturday should contact her on 546 5483. If you have umpired before and perhaps are not available every Saturday, you will still be welcomed with open arms. As part of Nelson Building Society’s ongoing relationship with Nelson Netball, the local umpires have been outfitted in a speciallydesigned Nelson umpire top. The Future Ferns umpires can be seen in their new bright pink t-shirts and are well hydrated from their NBS bottles.

Rainbow Ski area hopes to open for the 2014 season this Saturday, with some great new activities on field for all of the family - OR, a team building day out for your business! Workers on the field have been hard at work battling unseasonably warm conditions making snow for the Base area, and the usual swarm of Rainbow volunteers have put everything back in place and ready for action this Saturday. Rainbow Ski area has again relied heavily on their army of volunteer members to get the ski area ready for opening to the community this Saturday. Spokesman Hamish Neill says the amount of support from ALL ages is quite incredible. Volunteers put thousands of man-hours maintaining and upgrading the Ski Field every year. “This year has been no different and, weather and snow permitting, we are ready to go” “Weather leading up to the start of the season has had plenty of promise, and the usual

With that will come stacks of snow, so get ready!” This year, Rainbow plans to run fun kids’ activities on field every weekend that they are open. “We are a really family friendly field, and the facilities are perfect for kids' to have their first go at snow sports, be that skiing, boarding or tobogganing. There are great learner and kids packages for first timers, and just coming up and enjoying the mountains is for everyone" Family Day-Passes have been a real hit with families over the school holidays. Two adults and two or more of their children or grandchildren up to 17 year-old can ski on the pass, at the same price of only $190, with extra children added for only $30. Day passes have been kept as low as possible, with Rainbow adult passes costing $75 a day, $35 for children up to 17 years and seniors. Students from New Zealand and Australia can enjoy a day on the slopes for only $55, and children under seven can try their talents on the snow for free. Rainbow have introduced youth holiday training camps in 2014, available with 2 and 4 day packages that include 4 hours of lessons a day, plus day-passes and rentals. This program will really get the skill levels high for the season.

Quality rental gear is available, as well as repairs and maintenance services for snow equipment. Ski and board schools offer lessons for all stages of ability. This year the team welcomes back a team of highlyqualified international instructors, and
the very popular Rainbow Development Programme for budding skiers and boarders kicks off on July 27th. Rainbow offers group lessons, private lessons, and coaching programmes to cater for all levels of skier or snow-boarder, from novice to expert. If you sign up for a group lesson you will be assessed for current ability, and then assigned to an instructor with other skiers/riders of similar ability for your lesson. Private lessons offer the opportunity for either one-on-one coaching, or a group lesson with just your family or friends, and coaching specific to your individual needs. Kids’ marathon effort rewarded Nearly 1300 Nelson school kids can now say they’ve run the distance of a marathon – even though it might have taken them eight weeks. The Rod Dixon Kid’s Marathon initiative, which sees participants run 41km over an eight week training period at school, concluded at the Saxton Field athletics track on Sunday for the final run of 1500m. There, each runner received a gold medal thanks to the Haven Sports Trust at the finish line, and they were handed out by mayors Rachel Reese and Richard Kempthorne, as well as some of the top runners in the region.
The Rod Dixon Kid’s Marathon initiative began in the United States, where the former Olympian now lives. It was created to counter the growing obesity problem in the country, and last year it was introduced in New Zealand, starting in Rod’s hometown, Nelson. And the initiative seems to be having a great impact, with more than double the amount of entries in the second year. “But it’s not just about what we’re doing today. We hope these kids will take this with them through their adult life. It’s good to do exercise and they’ll feel better for it,” Debbie Lautenslager.

A deflating 5-2 defeat to Richmond Athletic has seen Nelson Suburbs first XI drop to second place on the Nelson Bays Football division one table. It was just AMI Suburbs’ third loss of the season but it proved costly, with Nelson College jumping into the top spot ahead of this weekend’s round, after beating Sprig & Fern FC Nelson 4-1. Nelson College top the table on 27 points after 12 rounds, with Suburbs second on 25 points. Fresh Choice Richmond Athletic, who still have to play winless Wakefield mid-week, are third on 20 points, two points ahead of Marlborough Mariners. Richmond will take on Nelson College at the Broads on Saturday in what is surely the match of the next round, while Suburbs could pick up a morale-boosting win over Wakefield and FC Nelson challenge Marlborough Mariners in Blenheim.
